GN Separation has recently supplied a 2-Phase Disc Separator for a seaweed slurry separation project in Southeast Asia, providing an efficient solution for the clarification and fine solid-liquid separation of seaweed.

The centrifugal force of GN's 2-Phase Disc Separator can reach up to 12,000 G, while conventional decanter centrifuges typically operate at a lower centrifugal force. The combination of high rotational speed and disc-stack separation technology enables the equipment to effectively remove fine suspended particles that may be difficult to separate through conventional gravity clarification or lower-G centrifugal equipment.
This makes disc stack separation particularly suitable as a fine clarification stage, where the objective is to obtain a cleaner liquid phase after larger or heavier solids have already been removed.
The performance of a disc stack separator is closely related to the characteristics of the feed material. As a high-speed clarification device, a 2-Phase Disc Separator is generally intended for relatively low-solids feed containing fine suspended particles rather than large or heavy solids.
As a general reference, the feed solids concentration is preferably around 1% and normally should be below approximately 3%, depending on the material and equipment configuration. The feed should also be free of large particles that could interfere with the separation process.
When the feed contains a higher concentration of solids or larger particles, pretreatment may be required before the disc separator. Depending on the material characteristics, a decanter centrifuge, vibrating screen or other suitable separation equipment can be used as a first-stage treatment to remove coarse particles and reduce the solids loading. The 2-Phase Disc Separator can then be used as a second-stage clarification unit to further remove fine suspended solids and improve liquid clarity.

This staged approach allows the separation process to be configured according to the feed characteristics and the required final liquid quality. It can also help protect the high-speed disc separator from excessive solids loading and improve the stability of downstream processing.
