GN Separation has recently completed the commissioning of a 30-inch bowl diameter Decanter centrifuge for a domestic mining slurry concentration project in China. The equipment has been successfully put into operation, helping the customer improve slurry concentration efficiency, reduce material transportation costs, and recover valuable mineral resources through continuous and automatic solid-liquid separation.

For this project, GN supplied a Decanter centrifuge with a 30-inch (760 mm) bowl diameter, representing one of the largest models in the company's product portfolio. Designed for high-capacity industrial applications, the centrifuge combines high throughput with excellent separation performance, making it well suited for mining, mineral processing, tailings treatment, and other demanding solid-liquid separation applications.

During operation, the high-speed rotating bowl generates strong centrifugal force, accelerating the sedimentation of fine solid particles. The differential speed between the bowl and the screw conveyor enables the continuous transportation of concentrated solids toward the solids discharge outlet, while clarified liquid is discharged from the opposite end of the centrifuge. This fully automatic and continuous process minimizes manual intervention and supports stable, long-term operation.

Mining slurry often contains highly abrasive mineral particles, making wear resistance a critical consideration in equipment design. To ensure reliable operation under demanding conditions, the Decanter centrifuge is manufactured using high-quality wear-resistant materials. The bowl is fabricated from duplex stainless steel, providing excellent mechanical strength and corrosion resistance. The screw flights are protected with replaceable tungsten carbide tiles, significantly improving wear resistance and extending service life when handling highly abrasive solids. Critical wear areas are also reinforced to reduce maintenance requirements and ensure reliable long-term operation.

Energy efficiency and operational flexibility were also important considerations for the project. The decanter centrifuge is equipped with an advanced variable frequency drive (VFD) control system, enabling operators to adjust the bowl speed, differential speed, and other operating parameters according to changing slurry characteristics. This flexible control allows the separation process to be optimized for different operating conditions while helping reduce energy consumption and operating costs.

Compared with conventional gravity thickening equipment, the GN decanter centrifuge offers several advantages, including a smaller installation footprint, faster processing, higher automation, and more consistent separation performance. The concentrated solids discharged from the centrifuge can significantly reduce the volume and water content of material requiring downstream handling and transportation, thereby helping lower logistics costs and improve the efficiency of valuable mineral recovery.
